The Versalino Nano 1.2 released!

The Versalino Nano 1.2 has been officially launched, and I can’t wait to share some of the updates with you all.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Versalino Nano, or the Versalino line in general, let me get you up to speed real quick. The Versalino is an Arduino compatible system that we developed in 2011, and have since made significant strides in improving. The Versalino Nano is a super small version of the Versalino Uno that can run any sketch you can load on an Arduino, while affording your the improved pinout and smaller size of the Versalino.

The Versalino Nano 1.2 keeps the same pinout as previous versions, but has a couple of improvements over version 1.1. The most obvious difference is that the new boards are Orange. We love the new color, and hope you do too. This color change comes as the Versalino design is further perfected on it’s 3rd (released) update.

Below is a picture of the Versalino Nano 1.2 as compared to the Arduino Uno (comparison for size).

Layout Changes:

IMG_28221.) VIN trace width increased, we found some ways to tweak the trace path, and get better current transmission capability out of the Versalino Nano 1.2’s power lines. This should help with your boards lifespan, and overall functionality with high currents.

2.) Crystal moved a little. Though nobody reported any problems with the Crystal oscillator, when analyzing the design the crystal was moved slightly to keep it from ever coming into contact with the 22 pF (pico farad) capacitors. This mainly helped to eliminate an extra manufacturing step.

Problems Clarified:

The board overheating problem is still possible to induce on the 1.1 version and the 1.2 version of this board; however upon further analysis, and work with our customers we have discovered that the problem in all documented cases so far has resulted from having the USB and external power connected at the same time.

This is because of the fact that having two regulated power sources going to the same line can cause an infinite current sync; which means that tons of current goes through the board if you have a slight difference in the voltage coming from USB and your regulator.

Because of this ensuring that only one power source is connected at a time has been added to the getting started procedures of our Versalino Nano Quickstart, and pinout guides. Please feel free to make any suggestions on how we could improve this in future versions of the design, and thanks in advance!
