Imagine for a moment that your sole purpose in life was to watch and wait for changes in the environment. Imagine spending every waking moment measuring, and calculating the occupied volume of your surroundings. Imagine your hopes and dreams hanging by the thread of a chance that something… anything will change the measured volume of your room.

Now if that sounds horribly boring and tedious to you too, than we just might have the sensor for you. That is to say if you would rather something else take on the burden, but of course if that sounded awesome you could choose instead to dedicate your life to this purpose. If it’s all the same we usually lean towards putting one of our handy PIR Motion Sensors into action.

The human detection sensors work great. I was really impressed with everything from the packaging the sensors came in to the instructions that came with the sensor. Everything was well protected and taken care of. Very professional, something I do not see enough to these days. I will definitely recommend this company to anyone.

This sensor worked great for our school project. It was much more reponsive than the old sonar sensor. Also the pir motion sensor is water resistant.

It works well but there’s not enough current from the signal pin to trigger a relay so consider that when designing your application for it. I’m looking at having it trigger something with higher current using a FET type transistor to then trigger the relay.

I could buy enough for my whole class. We used it with an arduino to build an app that uses a web cam to make a video trap.

Do you need this? No, but it’s such a cool dork toy, you just have to have one (or more). Very easy setup, adjustable triggering distance and latch time. Any time you want to detect when a change occurs around a room, this sensor is very sensitive. Nice.

This PIR detector is a good value. It’s small and easy to interface with. I use it in a stand alone application to detect motion but certainly it easily connects to your controller of choice for more advanced applications. The documentation is sufficient to get going right away.

Nice sensors. still figuring out how to use them, but they are real easy to use with your circuit. Only 3 wires, Power +, Power -, Signal out.
    Would buy again.

    Pros:
    Tiny
    works out of the box

    Cons:
no easy way to mount it directly to a board.
when it says that this can be used in simple circuits without an arduino, they don’t tell you that the output signal for when this thing senses activity is really only .3 volts, not the 5 volts I was expecting. something to keep in mind, because the output signal cannot actually power anything, it is really only useful for use with a microcontroller or an extremely sensitive relay.

5.0 out of 5 stars motion sensing trigger, January 26, 2013

Delivery from Virtuabotix was quick and secure. Item was well-packed in an antistatic bag with basic instructions included.

I did not need to download any new libraries. In fact, the sample code that comes with this sensor is only a few lines. The sensor has three pins as described in other reviews and it’s about as simple to connect to an Arduino as anything could be. Physically it’s thick, so if you’ve got a proto board or something similar, it’s not going to fit just anywhere. I managed to hang it off of one corner with the three pins inserted into three separate rows. It works but it’s not elegant.

Without a lot of information, I just set about twiddling the two pots on the thing to figure out what they did and found it fairly easy to adjust the sensing range and the time the signal holds high (at least, I think that’s what I was adjusting). Right now it’s sitting on my desktop lighting up a green LED whenever someone steps into range.

Documentation is scarce but can be found with some searching. I’ll try to squeeze the online location of a data sheet past the autobots below. Just get rid of the dashes and change “slash” to a real ‘/’ and crunch it together to see the complete address:

h dash t dash t dash p:// dash cdn. dash openimpulse. dash com
slash blog slash wp-content slash uploads slash wpsc slash downloadables slash DYP-ME003_PIR_Sensor_Module_Datasheet.pdf

If you can’t see the address above, that means the autobots have stripped out the URL anyway. Just search on DYP-ME003 PIR Sensor and you should find the datasheet somewhere. Good luck.

This review is from: Virtuabotix PIR Motion Sensor for Microcontrollers & other Electronic Projects
Unlike many Arduino sensor boards, this one actually has the documentation you need to make it work, and it works well. It is a good component for the beginner, or can be an important part of a more complex project.

The sensor has three pins . . . 5V,GND, OUT.

    5V to 5V on Arduino
    GND to GND on Arduino
    OUT to any digital pin.

Read the digital pin, and it will give you a “1” if there is motion in the field of view. Two pots set the sensitivity.

This sensor is cheap and perfect for any aplication that you can imagine.
You dont need a microcontroller to use it, because the internal circuits process all signals and you can easily attachthem to another simple circuit and make incredible stuff that require detects movement in a room or open areas.
I am going to use it in a domotic project and its perfect for my purpose, the only bad point its that the capacitors on the back dont allow you to put the sensor directly on the protoboard, to solve this problem i change the conector to a 90° one.

I used this for a project with an arduino. This came with documentation and information on how to use it.

    Pros:
    -Good range
    -Straight forward use
    -Works will with arduino
    -Versatile onboard settings

    Cons:
-A little thick due to the capacitors

If I need another motion sensor for another project I would but it again!

Virtuabotix is awesome! The motion sensor had some foam to keep the pins from getting bent and a full sheet of instructions including code and project ideas all inside an antistatic bag. With other arduino bits, I had to scour the internets for how to use them and for code samples, but everything you need for this item is in the box! The only complaint I have is that the pins are male, it’s only a problem because I didn’t want to buy female-male jumper wires, but some solder and my male-male wires got this working in my breadboard perfectly.
