If you have ever used other embedded linux controllers you probably know that it can be pretty tough to run a robot with just a linux controller. That is why we are so excited to have the PcDuino 3 available! This single board computer pulls out all the stops and does everything possible to make it easier to get the best of both worlds.

The PcDuino 3 features a full Arduino 1.0 pinout on top of the built in WiFi, Dual Core 1 GHz processors, and built in flash memory (that’s right, no need for an SD card if you don’t want one)! On top of that the system comes ready to go with an embedded Ubuntu operating system with custom versions of Scratch and the Arduino IDE that make it possible to start coding for Arduino Shields, and devices right out of the box.

All in all our team has found that the system is much easier to use for Arduino compatible control systems than most alternative embedded linux boards on the market today, and the added WiFi, SATA, Dual Core CPU, built in Flash drive, ATDs and loads of other great features make it an excellent choice for developers who want to take their electronic projects to the next level.

How to use your PcDuino 3

There is no way to tell you everything you can do with the PcDuino 3 because it is so versatile. You can do just about everything possible on the Arduino, and the Raspberry PI all with one device.

That said here are some basic getting started instructions:

First of all, unlike with other embedded linux single board computers like the Raspberry Pi, the PcDuino 3 comes with the operating system installed in it’s onboard flash memory. That means no more breaking your operating system SD Card! So all you have to do in the beginning is plug in a mouse and keyboard through a USB hub, and plug the PcDuino 3 power port in.

As long as you have the HDMI port connected to a screen/monitor, or TV then you should get an operating system loading screen and eventually see the Ubuntu desktop.

From there you can set up the onboard Wifi from the network settings control panel (accessible from the Ubuntu equivalent of a Windows menu in the lower left hand corner of the screen). Once set up, test to make sure you have network connectivity in the included web browser.

After you are up on the network you are free to use the PcDuino as a singleboard computer, or you can look into some of the cool embedded computing tools that come built in. A customized version of Scratch, and the Arduino IDE come built into the pre-loaded operating system, so you can jump right into writing Arduino software within minutes of setting up if you are already familiar with the Arduino.

Warning: The GPIO’s, and other pins on the PcDuino are 3.3 volt logic level, and can be damaged by 5V+ signals, so be sure to use the right logic level conversions when communicating with 5V devices.
